Heritage Middle School – Designing Adaptable Spaces for Learning

DESIGNING ADAPTABLE SPACES FOR LEARNING

THE STORY + THE SOLUTION

Horace, ND – Each space in Heritage Middle School was planned out for a purpose by their staff, and each furniture line we sourced and assembled to their specs to meet that specific space’s purpose.

Heritage Middle School’s staff knew exactly what they wanted for each classroom, staff office, and common area. The challenge for Business Essentials was to source the items to meet the bid and then assemble and install the whole school before the school opened in the Fall of 2020.

COMMON AREAS: DESIGNED FOR MULTI-CLASSROOM GROUP WORK

One of the unique approaches that Heritage Middle School takes to learning is creating spaces that are adaptable to either small group or multi-classroom learning. Each common area is surrounded by 3-4 classrooms that can open a garage door to face into the common area.

The furniture lines we sourced for the common areas are Hon Tables, FōmCore Ottomans, and Muti-use Curved Armless Sofas.

SPECIALIZED CLASSROOMS: DESIGNED FOR LEARNING PATHS

Then there are specialized classrooms. The height-adjustable custom tables from Wisconsin Benching TORO Tables  (pictured above) allowed us to set up stadium-type seating in a flat-floored classroom.

With the health challenges of 2020 in mind, we added hooks to each end of the table for students in these classrooms to be able to hang their backpacks for easy access.

The Shop Class classroom had reinforced tables from Wisconsin Benching that can withstand the heavy machinery used. While keeping the aesthetic of the wood and steel industrial vibe of the adjoining classroom.

The A/V classroom has FōmCore Ottomans (pictured) grouped around the room's whiteboards, and each of the HON tables has power and outlets it for students to be able to plug in their laptops during study/edit time.

One of the special needs classrooms (pictured with CHILL letters) has FōmCore Armless seating, Hon Tables, and Hon Bookcases. And we are pretty happy with the addition of the Sitwell wobble stools used from ECR4kids.

LIBRARY: DESIGNED FOR MEETING AND SOLITUDE

The library (pictured) has FōmCore Ottomans, FōmCore Armless, and FōmCore Benches throughout to provide places for students to study together or read in solitude.

STAFF OFFICES: DESIGNED TO BE AGILE

The Staff Offices have hybrid height adjustable desks – with legs from Hon, and work surfaces from Element.

AWARDS

For this project, we were presented with the Premier Award from FōmCore in 2020.
