The Media Center Is the Heartbeat of La Crescent-Hokah School District

August 2024

MEDIA CENTER - THE HEARTBEAT OF THE SCHOOL

THE STORY + THE SOLUTION

La Crescent School District, MN – Hokah Middle & High School wanted more than a color palette update, they needed new life pumped into their media center with reading stations, study stations, and tech-ready seating areas.

WHAT IS A MEDIA CENTER?

A media center is a modernized mash-up between a library, a study room, and a tech-friendly meet-up place for group projects or personal study. The layout prioritizes comfortable spaces with good lighting and access to technological resources to support learning and creativity.

Media centers can promote digital citizenship by teaching students how to use technology responsibly and ethically. They foster students' information literacy skills, enabling them to find, evaluate, and use information effectively.

With the pedagogy shifting from WHAT you learn to WHERE you can ethically source information, and what you do with it - Media Centers are quickly becoming the heartbeat of learning and of our schools.

WHAT IS THIS PROJECT'S MAIN GOAL?

The goal of this project: to provide a fresh look and feel for their outdated media center, while managing to the budget they had for this project.

How did BE Interiors help La Crescent-Hokah meet that goal?

  1. Furniture Build Flexibility

The layout we presented to La Crescent-Hokah provides options that add connection flexibility for furniture use in each zoned area. We created small zones within the overall large space for different purposes such as reading, personal study, group study, and presentations. The tables, chairs, and couches can all be reconfigured depending on whether the goal is collaboration, research, or self-study.

  2. Optimal Choices Within Budget

Because we wanted to keep within a budget, we went with a single vendor with multiple lines -- ensuring that the choices selected work well together to make a cohesive whole, while staying flexible within the zone's purpose. We wanted to make sure those options were the OPTIMAL choices for the budget they were working with.

Vendor: Hon Furniture Lines: Astir Sofas, Mav Lounge Chairs, Birk Coffee Tables, Birk Personal Tables, & Roll Call Lecterns

  3. Updated Modern Fabrics & Finishes

Keeping the purpose of each section or zone in mind, we connected the space through color. The fabric and finish selection for all furniture & flooring echoes the brand colors - complementing the space with school spirit.

LET'S MAKE IT FRESH

What was your favorite part of the design process?

Our team worked with the school brand colors in the Hon Palette Options for a fresh and modern look, without being too cold & impersonal.

If you look at the school website, you can see that the selected furniture fabric & finishes complement the school brand.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Not only did we get to create the layout with purposeful zones, flexible furniture configurations, and fresh new colors and finishes — we also sourced the furniture, installed it, and made sure the new space was fresh & ready for staff & students.

WHAT LA CRESCENT-HOKAH SAYS

Everything is theoretical until it's tried out. How does the furniture work in the new space? Is it fresh, and comfortable, and do they like it?

These students at La Crescent-Hokah gave their approval as they tested out a new collaboration area.
